About Block Printing
A variety of materials are used to create images using this two step process. The image is first carved into a block and then pressed into paper. The creative process begins on paper, giving me the opportunity to make changes to the design. Next I transfer the design to the wood or linoleum block, then I use a variety of cutting knives to carve the image into the block. When I am satisfied with the result, I roll ink onto the block with a tool called a brayer. After the block is well inked, I lay paper on the inked image. Then I press with a baren, a round disc tool, in a circular motion on the paper. The ink is then transferred to the paper and a print is created. The colors are painted with water colors to enhance the final appearance of the print. I very much enjoy the process of relief printmaking and hope you will enjoy the result.
